The Four Rules for Collecting Specimens

May 07, 2025

Collecting specimens properly is crucial for accurate test results and effective patient care. Here's a breakdown of the four key steps:

  1. Patient Preparation and Identification:
    • Verify the patient's identity using at least two identifiers (e.g., name, date of birth, hospital number).
    • Review any specific preparation guidelines, such as fasting requirements.
  2. Specimen Collection:
    • Use the correct collection containers, some of which may require preservatives.
    • Collect an adequate quantity of the specimen.
    • Follow aseptic techniques to minimize contamination.
  3. Specimen Processing:
    • Process the specimen as required by your facility (e.g., separating serum, mixing with additives).
    • Tightly seal specimen container lids to prevent leakage and contamination.
  4. Specimen Storage and Transportation:
    • Store the specimen at the recommended temperature.
    • Transport specimens to the lab promptly.
    • Use leak-proof containers and transport bags.
